There are plenty of moments in life that are good-- the first taste of a long-awaited frozen burrito, a cold beer, sex with a loved one-- but there are few moments that are truly sublime, that take us all the way out of our minds. Well, this past Saturday was one of the sublime ones. I'm still recovering.
The evening started casually enough, with the smooth grooves of Justin Petertil. Good stuff- the number about aluminum siding with all the old-timey harmonies has been bouncing around my head all day. Then the Spectacles obviously kicked it pretty hard. The cover of "Stephanie Says" had everybody screamin'. And the beginning of mathpanda's set was fun too, in a polite, head-bobbing kind of way.
Who would've expected full-on transcendance, though? Not until the mcs ditched the prerecorded tracks and Seth Vanek jumped on the drums did things really turn 100 degrees hot. Five minutes later, the legendary Johnny Marks was on the kit, Ben Davis was absolutely shredding on bass and minds started to reach the melting point. Something like 95% of the audience members ended up joining the band, whacking on cowbells, crashes, beer cans and whatever else they could get their hands on until 3 in the morning. And the rhymes just kept getting better and better! It was like a seance, or a revival. A lifting of the communal spirit.
Friends, let's do it again soon.
Upcoming Comptroller bizness? Well, the Fake Fictions record release is this Friday at the Empty Bottle. 'Krakatoa' just keeps sounding better and better, and the show should be amazing. And then, on Tuesday, April 22, the Spectacles are joining Casiotone for the Painfully Alone at the Beat Kitchen! Much to be excited about. I'll post more shortly...
